People
I'm endlessly fascinated by people.
Tell me about your favorite hobby. I don't have to share it—I just want to know what makes you love it. One of my favorite parts of traveling is realizing that people who seem completely different often care about exactly the same things.
Languages
For years I had a banner hanging in the front of my classroom that simply said, "Spanish is People."
It reminded my students—and me—that we weren't learning vocabulary for its own sake. Every language opens the door to new friendships, new perspectives, and a much bigger world.
